Getting over the water

With dangerous goods, the Mersey tunnels aren't always an option. Both are ADR Category D, and depending on a load's tunnel code, how it's packed and how much there is, some dangerous goods can't go through them at all. Anything carrying dangerous goods also has to stop and declare to the tunnel police before going in.

We check your load's tunnel code when you book. If it's allowed through we'll take the quick way, and if not we'll go the long way round over the Mersey Gateway and down the M56 and M53, so the collection time we give you already allows for it.

Every class we carry, from a single box to a full van

We carry every class of dangerous goods except radioactive, from a single box to a full van. Because of the refinery and the coastal manufacturing, we're often asked to move fuels, solvents and other flammable liquids, process chemicals and corrosives, gases in cylinders, and toxic and pharmaceutical intermediates. Most of it is time critical, because there's usually a production line or a vessel waiting at the other end.

CLASS 1 Explosives Flares, cartridges, perforating charges
CLASS 2 Gases Cylinders, aerosols, refrigerant gases
CLASS 3 Flammable liquids Paints, solvents, fuels, adhesives
CLASS 4 Flammable solids Metal powders, self-reactive substances
CLASS 5 Oxidisers and peroxides Hydrogen peroxide, nitrates
CLASS 6 Toxic and infectious Reagents, pesticides, clinical samples CLASS 8 Corrosives Acids, alkalis, industrial cleaners CLASS 9 Miscellaneous Lithium batteries, dry ice

A typical job Gas cylinders, Bromborough to Liverpool

A manufacturer needs flammable gas cylinders moved across the river. Their tunnel code rules out the Kingsway, so we take them over the Mersey Gateway, with the extra time already built into the collection slot.

FAQs

Questions we get asked

Can you take dangerous goods through the Mersey tunnels?

Some, yes. Loads with a tunnel code of E, or no tunnel code at all, can go through after a declaration at the police point. Anything restricted in Category D tunnels goes over the Mersey Gateway instead.

Does the longer route cost more?

It can add miles, so it's included in the price we confirm before collecting. You won't get any surprises afterwards.

Do you collect from Stanlow and the refinery estate?

Yes. Let us know the site's access and induction rules when you book.

Can you deliver for a vessel cut-off at Eastham or Birkenhead?

Yes. Give us the cut-off time and we'll plan the collection back from it.
